Using Google and Wikipedia For Research

In this chapter Randall McClure discusses how students have begun to stray away from the library and rely solely on Google and Wikipedia for their research. He studies two students Edward and Susan to compare how they use these common online databases for their writing assignments. He concludes that although these websites may provide enough information it is often lacking credibility because of a few factors. These include the lack of credentials for editors, a biased view in content, articles are not reviewed before publishing, and the sources cited can be invalid.

During his study McClure also realizes that students do not spend time checking the credibility of the information they find and tend to believe everything written on these sites as being truthful. This leads to flimsy arguments based on the multiplicity of the sources they find rather than the quality of the information they receive.
